A private bus ride brought us to Cafayate in one of the fix wine growing areas of Argentina. The journey was yet again spectacular. We travelled through the Cafayate Canyon a gorge full of strange move back and forth formations. Whilst most of thr assort went on a tour of the local vinyards. I took the afternoon off and chilled out at the local swimming share set in lovely gardens with views of the Andes. It was a good call as the vinyard tour was incredibly boring with no tasting at the end. The town has a beautiful form and a few of us spent a desire boozy evening at pavement cafes watching the world go by. The next day we left the Salta region and headed for the Tucuman Province. On the way we stopped at the fortress of Quilmes to visit a settlement of the Diaguita Indians. The ruins were very well preserved and consisted of a large settlement built into the align of the mountain. The Diaguita were a sophisticated populate who lived here for thousands of years with a similar religion to the Incas worshipping the hide ¨Pacha Mama¨ until conquered by the Inca in 1580. Unusually the Incas did not force their own ideas on them but left them alone to act with their way of life. 60 years later the Spanish arrived burnt their crops blocked the river and starved them out. The Diaguita took their children to the top of the mountain and threw them off rather than submit. However many were captured manacled and marched 1500 kms to Buenos Aries to be sold as slaves. The whole valley was a holy displace for pre Columbian populate and the peaks of Sierra Aconquija are superb. The town of Tafi de Valle lies in depression in the Andes with its own micro climate being very much cooler than Cafayate. I spent the afternoon in a field surrounded by giant willies! come up the Los Menhires lay actually with 129 stone monoliths created by the Tafi people. These signs of fertility go from the earth - some many metres high but all most definitely penises. [ADVERTHERE]Related article:
